Why is the Fall Recreational Program Co-ed?

Girls and boys can play futsal together in a safe and enjoyable manner.

Unlike soccer, the game of futsal features less physical contact between players.

Speed and quickness are more important than size and strength, especially in the youth game. By rule, slide tackling is not permitted either.

Futsal is fast paced and the futsal court is smaller than typical soccer fields. The game requires players to focus on ball control and passing skills.

For these reasons, our professional coaching staff is confident that forming co-ed teams will not jeopardize the health or safety of the players.

Futsal vs. Soccer

Both sports have much in common, but there are some significant differences too.

  • Futsal is played 5 v 5.
    • Each team has 4 field players + a goalie.
  • Futsal uses a "no bounce" ball.
    • A futsal ball bounces about 1/2 as high as a soccer ball.
    • This allows the ball to settle to the floor quickly.
  • Futsal has no offsides rule.
  • Futsal courts have out-of-bounds lines.
    • In this instance, futsal is just like basketball and outdoor soccer.
  • There are no throw-ins in futsal.
    • A ball that rolled out of bounds is passed back onto the court to restart play.
  • In futsal, substitutions are made "in the run of play".
    • This means a player can leave the court in the middle of the game and be replaced by a teammate while the ball is in play.
  • Slide tackling is not allowed in futsal.

What is futsal?

We're glad you asked!

In San Ramon and around the world, futsal is a fun, fast-paced sport that shares many similarities with soccer.

It is often played indoors.

At San Ramon FC, we are fortunate to have two indoor futsal courts for kids and adults to use.

Whether played recreationally or competitively, the sport of futsal is enjoyed by youth and adults for many reasons, including:

  • Small court, usually indoors
  • Small teams
  • Fast pace of play
  • In general, the sport creates more touches on the ball for players
  • Futsal improves ball skills, passing, and quick thinking
  • There is less physical contact between players than in soccer

Our club believes in developing the technical and tactical foundation of every child as a priority over the win-at-all-costs mentality found in many youth programs.

We incorporate futsal training into the curriculum of our competitive program. We offer futsal camps, clinics, leagues, and tournaments for recreational and competitive players.

Futsal skills carry over onto the soccer field, so soccer players benefit from playing the sport.

Futsal is also a sport unto itself.

Players who enjoy playing futsal will find additional playing opportunities as the game continues to grow regionally and nationally.

As our players are learning and growing, we train them in a manner that allows them to play with confidence, skill, poise, and control, and we demand that players implement in games what is taught in the high-intensity training.

We believe in developing crafty, attack-minded players that can confidently explore their options when playing, and our futsal courts and training programs provide the ideal venue for developing such players.

Overview: Winter Futsal Leagues

The futsal league is offered to all levels of play, and every attempt is made to ensure teams are placed at the appropriate level.

Coaches and families are encouraged to form their own recreational and select teams to take part, and should begin forming teams soon as the league fills up fast each winter.

If there are any questions regarding the futsal league please contact Ricardo Da Silva,  ricardo@diablovalleyfutsal.com, Mani Salimpour (Boys Technical Director), msalimpour@sanramonfc.com, or Zlatko Tomic (Girls Technical Director), ztomic@sanramonfc.com.
